What is a Blog ?

There is too much debate going on everywhere to answer questions like-

What is a blog? What a blog should be or shouldn't be? What should be called as blog or what should not be called as blog? etc. There are different people giving different views on the issue which are being put forth in different ways.

Before I put my point on the subject I would like to take you to the history of blogs.Justin Hall, a student in Swarthmore College is considered to be the first blogger when he started his blog- links.net.

At that time a blog was considered to be a personal diary or journal where a person published his day's events on the internet.

After Justin Hall many people followed him by creating their blog and published their thought. Those pioneer bloggers explored new areas where blogs can be used.Once new areas were explored , blogs just didn't remained a log of day's events or activity.Bloggers at that time began to put forth their views and opinions on news, politics and almost every topic you can think of.

Now blogs were defined as-

A personal website where a person can share his opinion with other people on the net.

At present blogs are used in a variety of ways. There are picture blogs, vblogs ( Video blogs), podcasts (audio blogs), klogs (knowledge blogs) , b-blogs (business blogs), corporate blogs and several others.

Since blogs are now being used for variety of purposes it is difficult to have a definition of blog which can include all these varieties.Let us take a look at how different people define a blog now-

Like an online diary. This can be about and be used for anything at all, it can be used for news, reviews, products etc for a business, organisation etc. This is great as it helps the user stay in touch with the website with new and up to date information.

With so much background I will now put forth my views on the issue.

"A blog is a website"- I don't think there is any confusion here.Google and any other search engines treat and rank a blog like any other website , so, there is no doubt that a blog is a website.

My point here is while defining a blog one must consider the facts that differentiates blogs from other websites. But the question here is -

what differentiates a blog from other websites ?

After hours of research I have found three points which differentiates a blog from other websites-

  • A blog is frequently updated
  • Blog entries appear in reverse chronological order.
  • A blog visitor can respond and give his opinion and suggestions on the topic in discussion through comment section.

I think these points differentiates a blog from any other website. If you have some more point to add you can do so through comments.

Now keeping these differentiating points in mind I will define a blog as-

"A frequently updated website where stuff (opinions, pictures, videos, product info or anything else in the world) is presented in reverse chronological order and visitors can present their views about the stuff in discussion through comments".

I think this can be a good definition of blogs.Your views and opinions on this topic are most welcome. If you have your opinion or if you disagree with me you are most welcome to let me know about your stuff through comment section.

the problem with defining blogs is that they are very dynamic. You define it today and the definition becomes obsolete tomorrow.
