Earlier in of my posts I have told you about the five factors that increase adsense income. The five factors ,I talked about are-
1) Blog traffic
2) High paying adsense ads
3) Ad placement
4) High CTR
5) Ad relevance
In this post I will talk about ad relevance and how to get relevant adsense ads on your blog. Relevant ads help in increasing CTR and thus income your b log generates for you.But before I tell some tips to get relevant ads ,I would like to say some sentences about how ads are delivered on a site through adsense program?
How adsense delivers ads on your blog?
Once you install the ad code on your blog the adsense bot (popularly known as mediabot) visits your site and crawl it. After crawling, the bot gets an idea what your blog is all about. It analyzes different words and phrases (Keywords) and based on those keywords it delivers ads on your blog.
Furthermore, adsense bot is a subdivision of the google bot and thus, its basic algorithm is similar to that of google bot.
How to get relevant adsense ads?
As I have already said, adsense bot is a smaller division of google bot and thus, the basic programming of both these robots are similar. So, to get relevant ads you should-
Make use of section targeting a tool provided by google to get relevant adsense ads-
Section targeting is a method provided by google to tell the mediabot what is important on your blog.It simply tells the bot about the sections or part of your content that should be focused upon to deliver ads.
You can get the details of section targeting at help page of google adsense.
Although google says it can't guarantee relevant ads through this or it may take a couple of weeks to crawl any changes in the pages but most of the times it works quite fine. In addition ,you should include a significant amount of content inside the section to get relevant ads on your blog.
Relevant ads are one of the determinants that increase your adsense income and so, it should be particularly taken care of.Traffic and high paying adsense ads are of no value if the ads are not relevant to your blog's theme.
How to get relevant Adsense ads ?

Posted by Dr. Sandy | | Adsense, Making money from Blog | 1 comments »Without any introduction and undue delay lets come to the point. I will start this post with a small question.
How adsense works?
I am sure most of you are able to answer this question. But let me answer this question for someone who don’t know the answer of this question.
“When a site/blog visitor sees an appealing adsense ad and clicks it you earn a share of money that advertiser pay google once ads are clicked.”
I think most of you will agree with me.( because there is no point to disagree in this !!)
OK, lets go one step further. Now I will extract some of the words from the answer I have given above.
1) “site/blog visitor”-
This is important as it is visitor who will click the ads and more visitors mean more clicks and more adsense income. In internet language we call no. of visitors as web traffic or blog traffic. So , more traffic means more income in general.
2) “sees”-
A visitor will click an ad only when he/she is able to see it first. If you have placed ad at some corner where visitor seldom scroll then that ad will not be seen, will not be clicked and you don’ get single penny. So , you have to place ads at a place where people are focussed.Placing an ad is referred to as ad placement.
3) “appealing ad”-
A visitor will click an ad only when he/she finds it appealing. An appealing ad is one which is on a subject or topic in which visitor is interested. In general if you have a post on dogs then your ads should also be about dogs. The idea is a visitor is on your page because he is interested in dogs , so , an ad on dogs will be appealing for him. In technical terms we call it ad relevance.
4) “Clicks”-
You will be paid only when some visitor clicks on your ad.So, if you are able to increase clicks you will increase your income. In technical terms we call it click through rates ( CTR).
5) “money that advertiser pay ”-
All ads don’t fetch you equal amount of money .Some ads pay you more and some less. Actually what you will be paid for a click depends on keywords you have used on your blog. So, if you are targeting a keyword for which bid amount is more you will get more money per click. The cost that advertiser pays for a keyword is called Cost per click (CPC).
So, now I think you have a fair idea about adsense and how to increase adsense income. To sum up the things-
1) Build traffic to your site.
2) Place the adsense ads properly.
3) Get relevant ads
4) Increase click through rates.
5) Target keywords for which average CPC is high.
You have to take care of all these five points in order to make handsome income from adsense. You won’t see results if you omit even one of the above mentioned point.
I will come up with details of each point in my upcoming posts so, check back soon or just subscribe to my feeds.
It's one thing to have a blog, it's quite another to get readers. If you have a blog and have been blogging for a while, you know what I mean. I was thrilled the first time someone commented on a blog post I made. A la Sally Field, I wanted to jump off my chair and yell: "Yes, you like me, you really like me."
It can be a lonely journey to start a blog, but once you do, you'll find that blogging can bring great value to whatever you're promoting. Your book, message or product can be greatly enhanced by the platform you create online. Now, it's just a question of finding readers and (of course) keeping them. Here are a few tips to get you started.
1) Write good blog headings:
Stay away from mysterious, nebulous blog titles. No one will read them and search engines can't spider them effectively. Be specific, tell what your blog is about in the title. Surprises aren't a good thing when it comes to blog titles.
2) Keep blogging –
Even if you don't think people are reading keep writing, eventually if you blog right readers will beat a path to your door.
3) Give away stuff:
Yes, it's ok to promote free stuff on your blog. Don't do it all the time but every now and again free stuff is a good thing!
4) Add your blog to your email signature line:
This is a pretty simple way to gain exposure. Every time an email goes out you're promoting your blog, what could be easier!
5) Comment on other blogs:
A great way to network with other bloggers is to comment on what they're doing/saying on their own blogs. Make cyber-friends, lots of them.
6) Invite people to guest blog or interview them:
They'll promote the interview on their blog and this will help you get readers and expand your network. These interviews also make for great content.
7) Don't be afraid to state your opinion:
Your blog is your opportunity to get center stage with something that's important to you. State your opinion, you may be surprised at how many people agree with you.
8) Make sure your RSS (really simple syndication) feed is working;
Otherwise, chances are people will forget you even have a blog. With all that we have to sift through daily, having an RSS feed that doesn't work could cost you blog readership. Do you subscribe to your own feed? You don't?! Then how do you know if it's working or not? Yep, just like the book marketing gurus will tell you to re-read your own book on a regular basis so you don't forget what's in it, you should also subscribe to your own feeds. Whether you have a podcast, blog or both – subscribing to your own feeds is the only way you know if folks are reading your blog.
There are, of course, dozens more ways to get readers to your blog and keep them there. These eight will get you started and keep the momentum going. Remember that while blogging may seem like a lonely way to promote yourself, blogs get picked up by search engines, and sometimes even media sites (like the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times) so the benefits to starting and keeping a blog are enormous.
If you feel like no one's reading you might be surprised. One day you'll get a notice that someone liked a post enough to comment on it. When that happens, you have my permission to be thrilled. Yes, they really like you.

Things to do During writing a blog post
Posted by Dr. Sandy | | Writing content for your blog | 0 comments »In one of my earlier post I have talked about -Things to do BEFORE writing a blog post. I have said that writing on a blog is like appearing in examination.Things you do before writing is your preparation. Now let us suppose you have a very great preparation but the question here is- Does that great preparation guaratee that you will score good marks in exam ??
Not exactly.Preparing before appearing in examination is great thing to do but marks scored in exam depends on how you have expressed yourself during writing exam .Similarly , researching before writing blog post is nice thing to do but quality of your content depends on how you have expressed your opinion and findings in the post.
For purpose of understanding , I will classify a post into two parts-
- Things appearing above fold-
- Things below fold
Make full use of two seconds-
So, while writing your blogpost you must pay a particular attention to the title of the post. Title is like advertising hoarding of your post because it is above the fold, it is the first thing that people notice and it is written in bigger font than rest of your article.
Another tactics to make full use of those two seconds is placing an image at the top, just left to the first paragraph.Images speak better than words. An interesting image can draw attention of the visitors and so you must consider placing a small image at the top of your post.
Channelise your visitors -
Once you are able to write a good title you will be able to channelise your visitors to first paragraph.Once you write good first paragraph you are able to channelise your visitor to rest of your article.
My point here is make the full use of the thing that appears above the fold.If you are able to generate curiosity in the readers mind then there is every possibility that they will read whole of your article or post.
Things to consider during writing rest of your post-
The thing below the fold contains the information that you want to deliver to your audience or visitor. There are many techniques bloggers apply to make their content read.I have always said that people don't read on net instead they scan through the content. They want to get or scan important points quickly.
So,while writing your content make sure that your content is scannable. There are many ways one can make an article scannable. I am listing some of the ways to make your post scannable-
- Write short paragraphs of 3-4 sentences.
- Use bold , italic, bigger fonts or different font colour to emphasize your important point.
- Use images to make your point understandable even to dummies.
- Make use of unordered or ordered list to list your points.
These are a few things to make your post scannable.
Let's sum up the things :-
- Write an attractive title.
- Use your first paragraph to generate curiosity.
- Make your post scannable.
Happy posting !!!

Blog Tutorial
Pagerank has become one of the hottest topic of discussion over internet since google introduced it for the first time. Most of the webmasters and bloggers become serious to get some links and increase their pagerank the moment they start their site/blog.In this post I will talk about pagerank.I will try to explain every aspect of pagerank in as simple language as possible. So,gear up for the go as I explain the pagerank.
What is Pagerank ?
Pagerank is google's way of representing the importance of a page on the web.It is a numeric value between 0 to 10.Higher pagerank mean higher importance and lower means lower importance.
According to google if a webpage is giving away a link to another page then it is casting a vote to another page. For example ,if a page A is linking back to page B then google sees it as a vote from page A to page B. (see the image below)
A site/blog with higher number of votes (links) has higher pagerank and thus, greater importance than a site having less votes (links).
Furthermore, google doesn't only takes the number of votes (links) to calculate pagerank but it also determines how important was the vote at the first place.Generally, links from a site having higher pagerank are more valued than from the lower pagerank if the number of outgoing links on both the pages are similar.
For example ,take a look at the figure below.
As shown in figure page A and page B are giving away links to your webpage.Page B has a pagerank (PR) 7 and page A has a PR of 4. So,the importance of link from page B will be greater than page A if they have equal number of outgoing links 'which is 10 in the above example. (I will tell you about importance of outgoing links later in this post)
Why pagerank is so important?
Pagerank is one of the factors that google take into account while ranking websites in their search results pages. Here, I want to make it clear that pagerank is not the sole factor which determines the high rankings but clearly it is one of the important one.
Importance of PR is more pronounced when you have targeted extremely competitive keyword.Generally ,when many websites target the same keyword then PR becomes an extremely important factor in ranking them. So,if you are targeting a competitive keyword on your blog you need to be more serious about increasing backlinks and PR of your blog or you run the risk of not being noticed on search engines.
How pagerank is calculated ?
The pagerank formula ,I am going to talk about is the original one that google published when they were developing pagerank.Probably they use some variation of this formula to calculate PR.But this formula can tell much of the basics of pagerank algorithm.
The formula is-
PR= 0.15 + 0.85 (PR1/OL1+PR2/OL2.........................PRn/OLn)
* PR1 ,PR2....PRn= Pagerank of websites linking to you
OL1 , OL2.......OLn= No. of outgoing links on the page giving link.
Now,those who are mathematics minded can easily interpret this formula but for those who are not I will interpret the formula.
From the above formula one can draw a conclusion that-
Pagerank is function of-
1) No. of incoming links (The variable 'n' in the formula)
2) The pagerank of webpages giving link. (The variable 'PR' in the formula)
3) No. of outgoing links on the page giving link. (The variable 'OL' in formula)
Now I will talk about each point in some detail.
No. of incoming links is a key factor in pagerank calculation.More no. of links mean more votes and more votes mean better pagerank.I don' think there is any difficulty in understanding this.If at all you get some difficulty ,you are always welcome to discuss that in comment section.
A vote from high PR site has greater importance than a lower PR site. For example , a page with higher PR is able to give you greater share than a page with lower PR.This can be understand as a bucket full of water can give you greater amount of water than one which is half filled.
The third point ,i.e., No. of outgoing links on the page giving links is one of the important point which is easily overlooked.A page with greater no. of links is able to pass lesser pagerank value than page with lower no. of links. It could be understood as, a bucket can give greater share if it has to give away water to 5 pots than giving away to 100 pots.
So, a link from pagerank 5 site having 10 outbound links is better than a link from a page rank 8 site having 100 links.Let us see how-
In former case share of PR that the page gives will be- 5/10= 0.5
While in later case it will be- 8/100=0.008
Simple mathematics, isn't it ?
So, now I think you have better idea of pagerank and factors that determine it.If you have any confusion or some points to add you are most welcome to convey it to me through comments.

There is too much debate going on everywhere to answer questions like-
What is a blog? What a blog should be or shouldn't be? What should be called as blog or what should not be called as blog? etc. There are different people giving different views on the issue which are being put forth in different ways.
Before I put my point on the subject I would like to take you to the history of blogs.Justin Hall, a student in Swarthmore College is considered to be the first blogger when he started his blog- links.net.
At that time a blog was considered to be a personal diary or journal where a person published his day's events on the internet.
After Justin Hall many people followed him by creating their blog and published their thought. Those pioneer bloggers explored new areas where blogs can be used.Once new areas were explored , blogs just didn't remained a log of day's events or activity.Bloggers at that time began to put forth their views and opinions on news, politics and almost every topic you can think of.
Now blogs were defined as-
A personal website where a person can share his opinion with other people on the net.
At present blogs are used in a variety of ways. There are picture blogs, vblogs ( Video blogs), podcasts (audio blogs), klogs (knowledge blogs) , b-blogs (business blogs), corporate blogs and several others.
Since blogs are now being used for variety of purposes it is difficult to have a definition of blog which can include all these varieties.Let us take a look at how different people define a blog now-Like an online diary. This can be about and be used for anything at all, it can be used for news, reviews, products etc for a business, organisation etc. This is great as it helps the user stay in touch with the website with new and up to date information.
SourceA frequent, chronological publication of personal thoughts and Web links.
SourceAn online diary where people can post messages and others may view and respond to the posts.
Source
With so much background I will now put forth my views on the issue.
"A blog is a website"- I don't think there is any confusion here.Google and any other search engines treat and rank a blog like any other website , so, there is no doubt that a blog is a website.
My point here is while defining a blog one must consider the facts that differentiates blogs from other websites. But the question here is -
what differentiates a blog from other websites ?
After hours of research I have found three points which differentiates a blog from other websites-
I think these points differentiates a blog from any other website. If you have some more point to add you can do so through comments.
Now keeping these differentiating points in mind I will define a blog as-
"A frequently updated website where stuff (opinions, pictures, videos, product info or anything else in the world) is presented in reverse chronological order and visitors can present their views about the stuff in discussion through comments".
I think this can be a good definition of blogs.Your views and opinions on this topic are most welcome. If you have your opinion or if you disagree with me you are most welcome to let me know about your stuff through comment section.
Want high Search Engine Ranking ? - Register your domain for longer period !!
Posted by Dr. Sandy | | Search engine optimization | 0 comments »Today I was going through one of the post on problogger on search engine optimization and came across something which I have never heard of from anyone else.
Take a look at the point I am referring to-
a recent patent by Google indicates that it now looks at the length of your domain’s registration in ranking it. It does this because many spam sites have short registrations and a longer one indicates that you’re building a site with substance and are in it for the long haul.
source
I had never thought of length of domain registration to be one of the players in search engine rankings.
Although Darren has not supported this point with any relevant link or any citation from google but I suppose a blogger like Darren would have sufficiently researched this before writing it on his blog.
I am researching on this topic and I will let you know about the results of the research once I reach to some conclusion.
I dug into this topic and find following points worth mentioning-
According to the patent awarded to google and as discussed by Darren ,google does consider the length of domain registration as one of the configuration to rank websites.According to google - if you registered domain for 10 years then you are more committed to your domain name and if you registered it for 1 years then you are not so committed to the domain.
Further, I found that length of domain registration is just a small player in determining the search engine rankings.Which means that if a domain has been registered for ,say, 100 years then this doesn't mean it will shoot up in the rankings in SERPs.Take a look at following lines-
keep in mind that this may be only a small boost (or a "tie-breaker" among two websites) when it comes to the actual search engine rankings. And, be aware that just because Google has a patent on the idea it doesn't mean that they're actually using that criteria now to rank websites. They, too, want to stay ahead of their competition (mainly Yahoo! and MSN).
-Source
I found one of the tip from search engine guide which says-you should monitor the length of domain registration of your competitors and register your domain for greater period than theirs.
The inference-Domain name length as configuration for search engine ranking has been patented by google but it is not clear whether google is actually using it to rank websites. To be on safer side, registering domain name for large period of time would be nice thing to do.

If I have to define 'Paid Reviews' , I will define it as- " Easiest and Deadliest way to make money from blogs."
I call it 'easiest' because the only criteria your blog has to fulfill is to be around for at least three months with average posting frequency (generally 2 posts a week will do). While in other programs like adsense you need decent pagerank and decent traffic on your blog to earn money.
I call it 'deadliest' way to make money because it can cause stunting of growth of your blog. The more reviews you will do the more stunting it will cause.
Most of the bloggers ,particularly, newbies fall prey to this trap because their attention is towards 'easy money' and they are just ignorant or overlook the darker side of paid reviews. If you are a person who has been reviewing sites for money or planning to do so, just halt here for a moment and take a look at the darker side of paid reviews as I am going to list some of the cons of paid reviews in the paragraphs that follows.
This is the 'deadliest' cons of the paid reviews. Most of the times you are asked to talk about only benefits of a website or product you are reviewing.Suppose you published a review post listing all benefits of a rotten and ugly website. Now since you have talked only about benefits of the reviewed site or product ,so, your visitors will see it as recommendation from you, only to find later that you have misguided them.Imagine ,how seriously it can hurt your impression as a blogger.
Your visitors will say you 'good bye' once you start hurting them by recommending wrong websites to them. This will cause stunting in your blog's growth in terms of traffic and subscribership.
Most of the times you have to give away at least three links back to the advertisers website.Next you have to keep those links permanently on your blog.Look at these sentences which has been used on the rules page of Blogsvertise and Smorty.Your blog entry must remain online and be a permanent entry in your blog.
All blog posts MUST BE PERMANENT. Bloggers who remove posts after being paid will automatically be declined and will no longer be accepted into the Smorty network.
So, you placed some links which will always remain there on your blog and what you are paid is a one time fee, usually a few dollars.Isn't this cheap , I mean, a one time payment for something which will remain on your blog forever.
Also giving away links will cause bleed in your pagerank and will cause stunted growth of your blog in terms of pagerank.
It is not always that you will find advertisers related to your theme of blog. This is the time when bloggers review something which is in related category but not exactly matches your blog theme.
Imagine a situation when someone landed on your blog in search of "dog breeds" and finds a review on "cat breeds".You can guess what impression you and your blog would have left on the visitor's mind.
I have already said earlier in this post that you have to give away links back to advertisers site.My point here is you are paid not just for reviewing a site but also to give away links. This is virtually link selling.
Google is against buying and selling links and there are instances when google has actually penalized websites indulging in buying and selling links. Now if somehow google finds that you have been selling links on your blog, it may penalize you by removing your blog from its index.
There are many other cons of paid reviews but those listed above should always be considered while you decide to review a website to earn money.Don't overlook the darker side while making a decision.
If you seek my advice on the issue then I will say you to refrain yourself from doing paid reviews.Paid reviews can bring some bucks in your pocket but in the long run they will never help you.Think big and see far !!!
I have read so many ebooks to increase my knowledge base on blogging.Today I was looking through all those ebooks when an idea clicked into my mind -
"Lets give away these valuable books to my valued subscribers to say 'Thankyou' in a different way"
So,I have decided to giveaway those ebooks to my subscribers for free.Of course I will not give all of them at once as it will be difficult to digest all of them at a time.Instead I will make an ebook available on 15th of each month.Means you will get the first ebook on 15th of March 2008. and next one on 15th April and so on.
So, just subscribe to my feeds and get an ebook free not once but every month.

Writing Softwares : Can they beat human mind ?
Posted by Dr. Sandy | | Writing content for your blogI first came to know about writing softwares through an email in my spam box containing details of a software , Instant article wizard. That email contained many tempting reasons to use the software.
To be honest, I was tempted to use the software to write my posts.I was fascinated with the thought of generating many hundreds articles without virtually raising my finger. You might also have been tempted to buy those softwares. But control your temptation right now and read this post before you proceed to buy it.
Let us continue with my story. So, I was tempted to buy that writing software but I decided to try some free writing software first before buying .I made a search in google for free writing software and found one.I just downloaded the software and and was ready to try it.I tried to generate an article on " keyword research" using that free software.
While trying that free software ,I found some really good points that make human mind different from any software.I am sharing those points below-
- While writing on blogs you have to organize your writing. You have to make sure that your most important points come first followed by next important and so on.Organizing an article or a post is something which only human minds can do.A software can't differentiate between more important and less important points.
- While writing a post you try to create humour in order to make reading less tiring and more interesting.Every successful blogger will tell you to make your writing interesting by throwing away a joke or two.A writing software can't create humour while a human mind can do so.
- To be a successful blogger you have to optimize your each and every page and post. For this you use your keywords cleverly in such a way that the article is friendly to both human beings and search engines.A writing software creates an article stuffed with keywords ,i.e., a software writes for another software (search engine spiders) while a human mind writes for both human and robots.
These are a few points that differentiates human mind from writing software.
My advice here is, never use writing softwares to build content for your blog as it will not help you to succeed as a blogger.Just rely on your mind to create content because your mind can create a masterpiece but writing softwares can not. Read more.....
This is the 8th and last post of Organic Search Engine Optimization (SEO) series. The earlier posts in this series were-
In this post I am going to tell you about the anchor text and how it should be used to harvest maximum from your link building campaign.
What is anchor text?
Anchor text are the texts or words you use to link your blog pages. For example, I have used words 'part 1' , 'part 2' etc. to link to to my earlier posts of organic search engine optimization series.(look at the first paragraph of this post)
For long, webmasters were accustomed to use words like 'click here' or 'here' as anchor text. But that was the time when search engines were not programmed to consider anchor text to rank websites. But now things have changed.
Search engines algorithm has changed and now spiders consider anchor text as one of the player to rank websites. That is why, anchor text is so important.
Besides benefits from search engines point of view there is one more benefit of using anchor texts.By using anchor text , visitors get an idea about the link and the blog/site they are heading even before clicking. But for this a proper anchor text has to be used.
Now the big question comes here-
How anchor texts should be used in order to get maximum benefits?
I am listing several points you should consider to choose your anchor text. Apply all these points and I am sure your blog will get some benefits .
- Never use words like 'click here' and 'here'.
This will not help your cause. The biggest disadvantage of using these words as anchor text is , they don't tell your visitors and search engines anything about your blog/site.
Your anchor text should tell the theme of your blog.Let us suppose, you own a blog on 'beauty tips'.Then your anchor text should be "beauty tips " or "Beauty tips and Grooming" or "beauty and make-up tips".These anchor text tell the visitors and search engines what your blog is about.
- The anchor text should contain your keywords.
Search engines take a look at the anchor text you use to link to your blog and if you are incorporating your keywords in your anchor text then their is all liklihood that your blog will rank better for those keywords if you have done all other things right.
Lets take the example of "beauty tips" here. The probable anchor texts could be-
"Beauty tips to look better" and "tips to look good".
Note here, both the anchor texts are telling the theme of the site/blog but in the first case the keyword has been incorporated while in later it is not.For organic search engine optimization ,the former anchor text is clearly better than the later.
- Never use same anchor text for all your links.
Most of the SEO experts will tell you to do this. The reason is, search engines ,particlarly, google will sandbox all your links or just devalue them once you use same anchor text for all your links. So, better use different anchor text for your links.
It will be a nice idea to make three anchor texts containing your primary keywords and two other secondary keywords ,then use them in a ratio of 60% , 30% and 10% with anchor text containing primary keyword with 60% of share. Most SEO experts will tell you to do so.
This way you can harvest maximum from your organic search engine optimization (SEO) campaign.
This ends my post on anchor text and also the organic search engine optimization (SEO) series.
Happy optimization !!!!
