There are many blogging platform out there on the net and many are popping up everyday on the internet. And as there are many platforms to choose from it is getting harder and sometimes extremely confusing when it comes to choose a platform to blog on. In this post I will tell you about the facts you must keep in your mind before choosing a blogging platform.

There are certain questions you need to ask yourself to be able to choose a blogging platform which suits you. I would like here , to tell you that there is nothing like best platform which suits everybody. So, the best platform for Tom and the best blogging platform for Jerry would be different depending on their needs !!

So, I was saying that you need to ask certain questions to yourself before pouncing on a particular blogging platform. The questions are-

What are your plans as a blogger or why you wish to blog ?

Do you want to pay to blog ?

What are your future plans as a blogger?

Let me take the first question first. Why you wish to blog? Different people blog for different reasons. Some blog for money others for fun and still others for profile or make their opinion count but vast majority have reasons which is a mixture of reasons said above.

So, before choosing a blogging platform you need to ask yourself whether you are here for money, profile or fun or anything else in this world. If you are for money then the platform of choice would be different and if you are for profile the choice may be different.

Now the next question, do you wish to pay to blog? Many of the blogging platforms are free some are paid and some others like livejournal are semi-free !! So, you must ask yourself whether you are willing to pay for blogging as there are some paid blogging platforms like wordpress which have better features than other free ones.

The third question is a bit hard to answer as sometimes you may not be clear where are you heading with your blogging aims. Sometimes aims as a blogger may change. I know some of the bloggers who started blogging for fun and changed their aim from fun to money. So, if possible be clear whether your plans are going to change in near or far future. You must be far sighted to be able to choose best blogging platform for you.

I hope you would have answered at least the first two questions for yourself. Once you have answered these questions you should head in following manner-

Blogging platform for those who wish to make money from blogs-

Most of the bloggers join blogosphere to earn some money from their blogs. If you are the one who wish to make money from blogs then wordpress would be best for you. But wordpress is not free as you have to pay for hosting as well as domain name.

Blogger.com would be a nice free tool to blog and make money from it.Blogger.com allows you to monetize your blog.It is easier to use adsense on a blogger.com blog.

You must not choose wordpress.com if you want to make money from your blog as monetizing a wordpress.com blog is against their terms of services.

Blogging platform of choice for those who blog for profile-

To get name and fame from your blog you need to be noticed by other people. So , you need a blogging platform which helps you to get high search engine rankings. Although there is not only one point that determines your search engine ranking but I have noticed some platforms to be more friendlier to search engines than others.

I have seen wordpress.com and blogger blogs to be getting indexed faster and also attain higher search engine rankings for targeted keywords. It is also a free blogging tool and so better option for those who don’t wish to take out some bucks from their pocket.

Wordpress.org is another option for those who can pay for blogging. Wordpress has a SEO plugin which makes it more search engine friendly and thus helps in getting high search engine ranking.

Livejournal blogs are not indexed faster so, if you are their for profile or even money then you should refrain from using it.

Blogging platform for those who blog for fun-

If you are their for fun then you can choose any of the platforms. Blogger and wordpress.com can be the best as they are easy to use and require little or no technical knowledge.

I don’t think many of you will pay for fun but if so, you should use typepad as it is cheaper or livejournal’s paid upgrade.

In any case decision of using a particular blogging platform should be made rather tactfully and should rest upon your needs and motive as a blogger. You must be far sighted to be able to choose best blogging platform for you otherwise you will end up selecting wrong platform for blogging and regret it later.

Every serious blogger knows the fact that building links for his/ her blog is essential to become successful as a blogger. This is because it is links which will give you high search engine rankings and decent traffic to the blog.

In recent times building links has been tougher than ever
just because webmasters are getting more and more conscious about outgoing links and how more no. of outgoing links can affect their pagerank. Getting links from the same niche sites is still tougher as webmasters see it as giving away links to their competitors.

So, in present scenario bloggers are left with only three options to build links-

1) Buy some links. But not every blogger can buy some links for his blog and also buying links violates TOS of google.

2) Get links from unrelated blogs. But these sort of links will have lesser value if not completely devalued.
.
3) Generate some quality content and wait for someone to link to them. But most of us including me would not like to wait that much.

The juice of above paragraphs is that it is very very hard to build links for your blog. It seems that folks at smorty have sensed this problem and came up with whole new concept of link building for bloggers.

Smorty has recently announced their post exchange feature according to which if you write a review of some blog , some other blog with similar rating as yours will write a review for your blog. Excellent feature, isn’t it?

Here I must tell you that the links you will get will be contextual links which according to google are more valued than other links. In short you will get high quality links from same or related niches by just writing a review on other blog. Link building can’t be less pain taking than this one.

Here I would like to emphasis one more point. The link you will get will not be reciprocal links. Let us suppose you write a review for blog A then blog A will not write review for you. Instead some other blog say, blog B will write review on your blog and blog C for blog B and so on. So, the links your blog or any other blog participating in this program gets is a one way link. You might be knowing that one way links are more valued than reciprocal or exchanged links. So, the links you get will be one way and more valued. Isn’t this cool !!!

What blogs can participate in this program ?

Although smorty follows several rules to approve the blogs but some important one are –

1) The blog should be around for at least 3 months to get approved.

2) It should have a regular posting frequency of at least 2 posts per week on an average.

3) The blog should not contain content which is defamatory, above 18 or spread hatred to a person or community.

Smorty has announced a perfectly well plan for building links when it is getting harder to get relevant links from other websites or blog. In my view this whole new program is worth trying for building links. I am planning to try this out for my blog and I will be commenting further on this program after using this service.

CTR is short form of click through rates. A higher CTR means , the ads are being clicked by more and more blog visitors and more clicks mean more income. This is the reason why a blogger monetizing his/her blog with adsense should be serious about CTR.In this post I will talk about some tips to increase CTR of adsense ads.

But before I start with my tips , I would like to tell about CTR in some detail. Mathematically , CTR can be calculated as-

CTR= No. of clicks /No. of visitors * 100

So, if a blog or site has been visited 100 times and 10 ads has been clicked then CTR will be-

CTR= 10/100* 100 = 10

Most of the blogs have a CTR below 1 and on an average a CTR of 3-5 % should be regarded as decent. Although there are some reports that some site owners have got a CTR in double figures but there are no evidences in support of this.

With so much of background , I will now quickly jump over to the point , tips to increase CTR.

CTR depends on following factors-

  1. The ad positioning or ad placement
  2. Ad relevancy
  3. colours of the ad
  4. No. of links (both outgoing and incoming) on the page
  5. Reader type
  6. Season

Ad positioning or ad placement-

Ad placement is a vital factor which affects the CTR. Cleverly placed ads can increase clicks thereby adsense income.Furthermore, there are no hard and fast rule for ad placement. Better ad placement varies from blog to blog and also from page to page.It is a matter of research and you have to research to find what placement fetches you most.

In general, ads at the top ,left and near the blog content has higher CTR.

One of the things which you can do to research your ad positioning is to create a heat map of your blog.Heat map of a blog or any site can be created using Google Analytics.Note following points-

  1. Average time spent on your blog- If people are spending more time on your blog or your posts it means that they are really reading your whole content and in this case it is probable that ads placed at the bottom of your post will be clicked.
  2. What are the top entrance and top exit pages- Top Entrance pages should contain links to specially adsense optimized pages and top exit pages should have ads placed on the top and in the top of the sidebar.
  3. Where people are clicking-Anaytics can show you what are the areas where links has been clicked.Placing ads in the areas where links are being clicked can increase CTR of adsense.

Ad relevancy-

Relevant ads are more oftenly clicked than irrelevant ads.So, a blogger should apply some of the tricks to get relevant ads from adsense. Here I would like to talk about a point.Adsense bot (mediabot) is a sub-division of google bot and so, it crawls the pages in similar way as googlebot.

This means that if you are making your keywords bold or italic , using your keyword in the title and using your keywords time and again in your post you will get relevant ads. These are basic SEO techniques which also work to get relevant ads from adsense.

There is one more tec hnique which makes use of section targeting. In this you tell mediabot , what is important and what is not by inserting a small piece of code in your content.I will talk about this in a bit more detail when I discuss ad relevancy in detail in some other post.

Ads colour and design-

There is a long article available at google adsense help centre on coloue of ads. I recommend you to go through that article. But in short, I will discuss three points-

Blending- Here you choose the ad colour in such a way that it matches with the background and margin of your blog.

Stand out- Here you choose the ad colour which is contrasting to your background.

Complement- Here you use a colour which is already present in your blog.

You can get the details here.
You should research to find what colours are bringing higher CTR and use the same.

No. of Links-

More no. of links mean more options to click and less links mean less option to click. The adsense optimized pages should contain no or fewer links especially outgoing links.I know some of the folks who don't provide any link on their adsense optimized pages , so, visitors have the a few option of either closing the window or,hit back butoon or click some of the ads which sounds appealing to them.

Visitor type-

A blog with more number of repeat visitors experience lower CTR than a blog with new visitors. The reason is, repeat visitors or loyal readers get well acquainted with your ad position and so, there are lesser no. of clicks , a phenomenon called as ad blindness. If you have more number of repeat visitors , you should frequently change your ad positions and colours to negate the effect of ad blindness otherwise you should stick with what is working best for you.

Season-

This may sound incredible for some but it is true.I myself has experienced this on one of my travel blogs.I have seen a rise in CTR in summer season on that blog.

I have just guided you towrds the right path to get higher CTR.But higher CTR can only be get if you research and observe what is working best for you.I would once again repeat that CTR varies from blog to blog and from page to page , so, you must research yourself to see what is working for you and what is not.

top paying keywords-Blogging guides

One of the factors that can skyrocket your adsense income is the high paying ads.I must say this is not the sole factor which operates to generate income from adsense program but this is clearly one of the important factors which can make a great difference to your income and money making potential of your blog. Here in this post I will talk about some tips to get high paying adsense ads on your blog.

Before I start with my tips , I would like to tell you a bit about the the procedure google follows to deliver ads to your blog. The ads appearing on your blog comes through adwords.Upon signing up for adwords program advertisers has to choose certain keywords related to their websites, products or services. After choosing the keywords they have to bid on each keyword they have selected. The bidding amount is the amount they will pay when somebody clicks their ad.

So, if you are targeting a keyword with high bidding amount then the amount you will be paid will be higher. This is the basic concept of getting high paying ads on a blog. Now, million dollar question here is , How one could know what keywords will fetch high paying ads? I will answer this question in the paragraphs that follows.

I have found three sites that provide you with the list of high paying keywords also called as PPC keywords. These are-

  1. Google Adwords keyword tool
  2. Rumler Internet Services
  3. Keyword Country

Google Adwords keyword tool-

This tool was originally devised for advertisers but a publisher can use it for his advantage.Upon entering a keyword this tool produces a list of related keywords with average CPC values, advertiser competition and search volume as shown below in the image.

Top paying keywords- blogging guides

For getting high paying ads you should target a keyword with high average CPC.In the image above you can see that the avg. CPC for keyword "SEO" is $4.18 and for "SEO Companies" it is $7.45. So,by targeting the keyword "SEO companies" you will be able to get higher paying ads than targeting "SEO" as your keyword.

Apart from average CPC you should also pay attention to 'Advertisers competition' column. This column gives you an idea about number of advertisers who are targeting a particular keyword. You should target a keyword with higher no. of advertisers.

Rumler Internet Services-

This is little known website but they have got a giant list of high paying keywords listed in alphabetical order. They also tell about maximum CPC of a particular keyword which adwords keywords tool doesn't tell you.

The only disacvantage I find with this website is that they don't provide you with a list of related keywords at one place.Sometimes it becomes time taking to use this tool.

Keyword Country-

This is the best tool to find high paying keywords for your blog because it provides many information which you won't find anywhere else.It will suggest many high paying keywords, it tells exact or near exact number of addvertisers who are targeting a particular keyword and much more.

The biggest cons is that it is not free. You have to pay to make use of their services.

Using the above mentioned tools you can get a list of high paying keywords.Remember keywords decide what ads will appear on your blog and it is again keywords which will decide what amount you will get when someone clicks ads on your blog. So, pay a particular attention to keywords, do keyword research if you wish to get high paying adsense ads and earn more money from this program.

This is my first video post.Earlier I have just published text based posts and I am enthralled to post the first video post on this blog today.

Wordpress.com is a free blogging tool and some consider it as the fastest growing and very elegant blogging tool.Apart from this , ypu don't have to care about blog setup, backup, security and upgrades, so you don’t need any technical knowledge.

But there are certain cons of wordpress.com which you must keep in mind before decidimg to go with this blogging tool. The cons are-

  1. You are not allowed to change template or use your own and the number of templates wordpress.com provides are less and not so good.
  2. You are not allowed to monetize your blog.
  3. You don't have domain name of your own.

But if you wish to start a blog on wordpress.com , here is a video tutorial explaining the step by step procedure from joining to set up and administration of wordpress.com blog.

From personal experience i have found that people who try to increase traffic to their websites domain will at some point attempt a whole bunch of “optimisation techniques” without knowing if any of it really has had, or is having, any effect at all.

Some of the SEO techniques I have seen people attempt are, whilst quite useless, based on a good idea. Other methods continually surprise me. Perhaps people that try such things have heard spurious rumours of how to get their site into Google’s top ten listings from certain forums. Incidentally they are probably at such a point of desperation that they are willing to try anything to gain just ten more visits.

I am regularly inundated with the same questions such as: Is it worth submitting my site to 300 search engines? Will I be penalised for cross linking my sites? Should I pay to have high ranking sites link to mine? And what exactly does Google page rank do, if anything!?

Questions such as these have driven me into despair and consequently writing this article during which i will attempt to explain definitively the more common SEO myths, risks and pitfalls. In this article we will examine some of the more common beliefs.

Before we get to the list it is worth noting that I have not written it in a particular order and at times I have explained the topic the myth concerns before answering the question.

Link Building

Q)Will the more links that point to my website increase my sites placement in search engines?

Yes, It will definitely help your website as far as the major search engines are concerned. The most popular search engines (Google, Yahoo!) use the number of links aimed towards a website as an important factor in determining the sites placement. They look for a link(s) to your website to be coming from sites with; high traffic, quality content and a high page rank, amongst other things.

Do no cross link, do not spam your address in forums and on social networks and do not put it on irrelevant sites, or those that seem slightly dodgy. Take your time, aim for directories that are related to your website, aim for directories with page rank 3+ or aim for blogs or similar sites that are relevant to your content.

Q)Is it worth me buying a place on a high ranking directory?

So the idea with this is that, say, a directory has a Google page rank of 7 and is very popular. Any site on it will be getting a big rub off via a higher spot on search engine rankings. However the catch is the directory charges £50 a month for your listing. Is it worth it when there are so many free directories out there?

Personally I think it is worth it, as long as the site holds its high rank and doesn't have thousands of listings competing with yours on it. The added bonus with pay for listings is that they usually review and include your site very quickly (24hours), which by itself may be worth paying for. And if you could buy 10 spots on decent directories your site will most likely become highly ranked on search engine results.

There are problems with this though. Firstly, it is said to be against Google’s terms of service – paying to get a higher listing on Google’s organic results. (Google want their results to show the best and most relevant websites, not those with the most money behind them) They are however, unlikely to be too bothered even if they do find out.

The next problem is the cost. For a small company or personal website it is too expensive to pay monthly for many directories to list them, and possibly not worth it. Lastly, it is not guaranteed to help your website. It should, but does not always. I have paid for listings before and noticed very little difference, whilst other times it has made a huge contribution to my sites ranking. So it may be a risk, but it can pay off extremely well.

Q)Will submitting a video about my site or product to places such as Youtube be of benefit to me?

A recent link building trend has been to submit a short video describing the webmasters site or the service it provides, to as many video submission sites as possible. The theory behind this being that search engines give more weight in their results to pages with videos.

So if your site or product has a video on Youtube, when that product is searched for on the web that video will often come up in the top ten results. If this video has a link to your site in it, under it or as nearby as you can put it, it should be good news for you and your site. People find the video as it is ranked so highly in the results, watch the video, like what they see and then visit your site to perhaps purchase what they saw.

Does it work? At the time of writing, yes it does and it is probably worth doing. Make a video, even if it is just text, sound or a power point presentation, and then submit it to as many video and social networking sites as possible. People will find it and it will hopefully persuade them to visit your site.

The only real problem with this being that the search engines will not like all of the “video spam” now being posted on the internet and are likely to change (lower) the priority of videos in their results.

Google Page Rank

Q)Will having a higher Google page rank(PR) increase the number of visitors to my site?

Before we can answer that we will have to look at what exactly Google page rank is. Google page rank is a spurious form of measurement for site popularity that the company introduced fairly recently. It is unknown to everyone, except possibly Google, how exactly it ranks sites.

It is assumed however that its rankings depend upon links that are outside of your site that point in towards it. New websites may not have a page rank for many months. It is also possible to have a very successful website with thousands of visitors and sales and still not being ranked highly, if at all.

This is because Google only ranks pages once every few months, probably around once every three-four months. So if you start your website and straight off advertise heavily on high PR sites you might receive a high volume of traffic but it may still take months for Google to look at your site and rank it accordingly.

To see a websites Google page rank you can download the Google toolbar and then once it is installed right click on it and select show page rank. However this is only a snapshot taken once every quarter (roughly), so beware.

So back to the myth – Does having a higher Google page rank mean more visits to your site? Well, yes and no. No, because it alone doesn't actually have any effect on search engine placement and as such won’t increase your traffic. However, if you have a high Google page rank it means that your site has lots of quality links aimed towards it and as such you should already be ranked highly in search engine results and thus should be receiving increased traffic.

Purchasing Traffic

Q)Is it worth me buying 10000 hits for £££/$$$?

OK, we have all seen the adverts in our email promising thousands of targeted visits for an amazingly cheap cost. And at one point or another we have all been depressed enough to be tempted by them. But just say no.

The idea is, for say 100 pounds (or 200 dollars), a traffic company will direct ten thousand or so visitors to your site who are actually interested in your content. It sounds great and some companies will actually provide what they say as far as traffic to your site is concerned.

However I have never found one where the traffic is actually targeted and people even bother to look around my sites. Often it turns out to be a robot that is obviously not going to look or buy anything from me. If not it may be that thousands of unfortunate people have had a dozen pop up windows attack them as they bravely try to fight them off.

I may be generalising slightly with this, but usually the people that are directed or redirected to your website will want nothing more than to close it down.

It could possibly work for you if your site instantly captures people and most of your money is made off advertising that these people quickly click on before closing you down. However do not attempt to use bought traffic whilst using Google Adsense on your site as it is against their rules and your account might be terminated without warning.

Another possible benefit is that some search engines rank sites based on incoming traffic, thus 10000 more hits by anybody may actually boost your rankings. However, this is unlikely to fool search engines such as Google or Yahoo!.

Cross Linking

Q)What is Cross Linking?

Cross linking is a webmaster practice whereby a person owns many domains, uploads an identical site to each and then heavily links each domain to the others. For example, person A registers lotsofhits, com, but is not getting enough traffic. To fool the search engines into thinking it is a popular website he registers a hundred more domains, so each will have different web addresses but all have the duplicate page content of lotsofhits, com, and all of them link to one another.

This in theory should boost the pages rank, as Google, along with other search engines, determine the importance of a site based on links from outside websites pointing to it(along with a few other things). It would also mean that there are a hundred more sites on the web that sell the same product as lotsofhits, com that could all possibly be found.

Q)Will Cross Linking my site(s) be penalised by search engines?

This is not a myth - search engines often penalise or even temporarily ban sites that Cross Link. If Google detect completely duplicate content on even just two sites that link to each other, then they will at least lower your page and result rankings, if not ban both sites.

Q)I have heard cross linking is fine as long as the sites do not have completely duplicate content. Is there any truth in this?

If you are determined to Cross Link the safest way would be to own two or three domains that link to each other but each of which have completely unique content and link to other sites as well as one another. It is hardly worth creating two or more unique sites for the sole purpose of cross linking and I would not recommend doing so anyway.

SEO Software

Q.Is it true that there is no point in doing any manual search engine optimisation or search/site submissions when you can buy software that will do the job for you?

There is a little truth behind this, but not much. Whilst certain software might make for an excellent tool in assisting your SEO campaign, in the end there you will find there is no substitute for hard work. For example you can download a program that will submit your site automatically to 10000 search engines or put a link to you web page on 50 other sites.

The problems there being: only four major search engines exist and between them they take over 80% of all search engine traffic. Those search engines will find your site automatically and rank it according to, amongst other things, relevant and unique content – making the 10000 search engine submission promise redundant (even if it were true).

There are good tools available that will track your visitors (Google analytics), tell you how your site could be made more search engine friendly and software that even tracks how each of your keywords are ranked in major search engines. However, if you are purchasing such software, try to find a trustworthy independent review first so that you are sure you are not getting ripped off. Also try to make sure that any software you use does not go against Google’s terms of service.

So, whilst certain software can and will be useful to you, there is no replacement for hard work and unique content and regular updates. The search engine rankings should then take care of themselves.
