As I have already said in my previous post on link building by post exchange through smorty that link building is getting tougher and tougher for bloggers. In this post I will talk about ten powerful ways to build links. The ways or tips I will talk about here are working pretty fine and most importantly they are free (absolutely free rather!!)

So, without wasting your much of the time I am going to discuss all the points one by one. Here comes the first one-

1) Write quality content which stands out of the crowd-

This is the most powerful way of building links. If you are generating some good quality content and you are doing it consistently other bloggers will give away links to you without you asking for it.

Here I would like to make it clear that not all types of content will give you links. There are some specific type of content which will give you more links than others. In general an updated unique content or a controversial post will bring you more links than other types of post. But while writing a controversial post you must have some solid facts to support your controversial points or it may bounce back on you and your reputation will go down.

2) Tag your internal links with rel=”tag” attribute-

This is very little known technique of building links. The beauty of this tip is that you get oneway link by just adding a code in your internal links. To link to some page you use the code which looks something like this-

To build links you need to use the code like this-

Note that ,I have just added a small piece of code “rel=tag” (in red) to the existing one.

You might be wondering how does it works. Well working of this method is simple. Some of the services like, Technorati ,icerocket etc. allow you to tag your posts. The spiders used by them recognizes rel=tag attribute and indexes them on their pages and this indexed page of yours act as a live link for your blog which is one way and does follow.

3) Make some videos and upload them on sites like youtube-

Youtube can be used to build links for your blog as well as drive some trffic if your video is liked by the users. But here I will talk about link building only. Well once you start uploading your videos on youtube , you have to fill up some form before uploading. In the description of the video you may give a live link back to your blog.

The disadvantage of this method is that you are not able use an anchor text for your link.

4) Guest posts on other blog-

You can write guest posts on other blogs. This is a win win situation as the other blog gets content and you get links for your blog. So, try to persuade other bloggers to write a guest post on their blog. Also, the links you get will be contextual which according to google are more valued than other links.

5) Press releases-

I have not seen many bloggers doing this but believe me this is one of the most advantageous way of building links. If you have anything worth mentioning or announcing to the world then you must consider a press release. It also brings some popularity and some traffic to your blog.

6) Submit your blog to web directories-

Submit your blog to as many directories as you can. This is proven way of building traffic to your blog. There are many softwares available on the net which can submit your blog to many directories at once. But make the process gradual. It is better to submit your blog to a dozen directories at a time than to submit to 1000 directories all at once.

7) Article marketing-

Article marketing is writing some content which others can use on their site or blog with a link back to your blog through the authors bio. This is done through the article directories. All you need to do is write some good articles and submit it to as many article directories as you can. There are several article submitter softwares available on the internet. Just download anyone of those and submit your articles to several article directories all at once.

8) Comment on other related blogs-

Commenting on other blogs is a very time consuming way of link building as to get really profitable number of links you need to comment on hundreds of blogs and thousands of pages. But if it is done regularly on day by day basis it can really build some links for your blog in some months. If you are commenting to get links then you must make sure that links in comments are followed.

9) Be active in forums-

Forum is a place where people share there problems and get answers from other forum user. In most of the forums you are allowed to leave your signature with your blog’s address. So, the more active in forums you are the more links you will get for your blog. But this requires constant motivation for part time bloggers like me.

10) Participate in Groups like google and yahoo groups-

Google groups or yahoo groups is a place where people share their stuff or ask questions to other group members. It is just like forums and thus works pretty much in similar way as forums. So, just participate actively in groups and leave your signature with your blog’s address at the bottom and build links for free.

These are all free way of building links for your blog. But each of these require some active and constant motivation and patience to build some appreciable amount of backlinks. Although these ideas work slowly but they work quite perfectly. If you are about to use these ideas then don’t just expect things to occur overnight but I can guarantee that these tips will work once you are following them constantly.

Pagerank Explained

Posted by Dr. Sandy | | | 0 comments »

Pagerank has become one of the hottest topic of discussion over internet since google introduced it for the first time. Most of the webmasters and bloggers become serious to get some links and increase their pagerank the moment they start their site/blog.In this post I will talk about pagerank.I will try to explain every aspect of pagerank in as simple language as possible. So,gear up for the go as I explain the pagerank.

What is Pagerank ?

Pagerank is google's way of representing the importance of a page on the web.It is a numeric value between 0 to 10.Higher pagerank mean higher importance and lower means lower importance.

According to google if a webpage is giving away a link to another page then it is casting a vote to another page. For example ,if a page A is linking back to page B then google sees it as a vote from page A to page B. (see the image below)

Blogging guides-pagerank image

A site/blog with higher number of votes (links) has higher pagerank and thus, greater importance than a site having less votes (links).

Furthermore, google doesn't only takes the number of votes (links) to calculate pagerank but it also determines how important was the vote at the first place.Generally, links from a site having higher pagerank are more valued than from the lower pagerank if the number of outgoing links on both the pages are similar.

For example ,take a look at the figure below.

Blogging guides importance of page rank

As shown in figure page A and page B are giving away links to your webpage.Page B has a pagerank (PR) 7 and page A has a PR of 4. So,the importance of link from page B will be greater than page A if they have equal number of outgoing links 'which is 10 in the above example. (I will tell you about importance of outgoing links later in this post)

Why pagerank is so important?

Pagerank is one of the factors that google take into account while ranking websites in their search results pages. Here, I want to make it clear that pagerank is not the sole factor which determines the high rankings but clearly it is one of the important one.

Importance of PR is more pronounced when you have targeted extremely competitive keyword.Generally ,when many websites target the same keyword then PR becomes an extremely important factor in ranking them. So,if you are targeting a competitive keyword on your blog you need to be more serious about increasing backlinks and PR of your blog or you run the risk of not being noticed on search engines.

How pagerank is calculated ?

The pagerank formula ,I am going to talk about is the original one that google published when they were developing pagerank.Probably they use some variation of this formula to calculate PR.But this formula can tell much of the basics of pagerank algorithm.

The formula is-

PR= 0.15 + 0.85 (PR1/OL1+PR2/OL2.........................PRn/OLn)

* PR1 ,PR2....PRn= Pagerank of websites linking to you
OL1 , OL2.......OLn= No. of outgoing links on the page giving link.

Now,those who are mathematics minded can easily interpret this formula but for those who are not I will interpret the formula.

From the above formula one can draw a conclusion that-

Pagerank is function of-

1) No. of incoming links (The variable 'n' in the formula)

2) The pagerank of webpages giving link. (The variable 'PR' in the formula)

3) No. of outgoing links on the page giving link. (The variable 'OL' in formula)

Now I will talk about each point in some detail.

No. of incoming links is a key factor in pagerank calculation.More no. of links mean more votes and more votes mean better pagerank.I don' think there is any difficulty in understanding this.If at all you get some difficulty ,you are always welcome to discuss that in comment section.

A vote from high PR site has greater importance than a lower PR site. For example , a page with higher PR is able to give you greater share than a page with lower PR.This can be understand as a bucket full of water can give you greater amount of water than one which is half filled.

The third point ,i.e., No. of outgoing links on the page giving links is one of the important point which is easily overlooked.A page with greater no. of links is able to pass lesser pagerank value than page with lower no. of links. It could be understood as, a bucket can give greater share if it has to give away water to 5 pots than giving away to 100 pots.

So, a link from pagerank 5 site having 10 outbound links is better than a link from a page rank 8 site having 100 links.Let us see how-

In former case share of PR that the page gives will be- 5/10= 0.5

While in later case it will be- 8/100=0.008

Simple mathematics, isn't it ?

So, now I think you have better idea of pagerank and factors that determine it.If you have any confusion or some points to add you are most welcome to convey it to me through comments.
